Integrative PeriOperative Care

Surgery can be daunting, and even when done by the best surgeons, can be traumatic on physical and mental/emotional levels. It is reassuring for patients to receive guidance in how they can proactively prepare for surgery and ways that they can optimize their healing from surgery. Participants will gain an understanding of integrative interventions that can provide surgical support across all stages of the perioperative period.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Assess patient frailty and its contributions to perioperative risk
  2. Define Perioperative Care and Integrative Perioperative Care
  3. Incorporate ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) principles, objectives and pathways
  4. Identify key integrative strategies prior to surgery to optimize surgical outcomes
  5. Identify patient risk factors for surgery as well as integrative strategies to maximize patient resilience and reduce this risk
  6. Identify the contributory role of chronic inflammation in increased risk of post-surgical complications
  7. Identify evidence-based strategies for optimizing surgical outcomes throughout the peri-operative period
  8. Discuss controversial issues regarding integrative co-management during perioperative care

Curriculum

I. PeriOperative Foundations
II. Pre-Operative Integrative Medicine
III. IntraOperative Integrative Medicine
IV. Post-operative Period and Management
V. Integrative PeriOperative Care Summary
